ANAIS NIN

anais nin.jpg
"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." ~ Anais Nin

I think this is such an interesting photo of novelist Anaïs Nin...it must be from a film or something. I wonder how they created that lighting effect around her face?

Was she the inspiration for the fragrance Anais Anais?

IMAN...back in the day

iman - gia -.jpg
Iman, Gia and Lisa (who was married to photographer Marco Glaviano) in a early ad for Diane von Furstenberg. Look closely at Iman's face. That's the face I remember making up early in both our careers, except that the first time we worked together I remember her having puffy deep grooves under her eyes which were a challenge for me to conceal as a makeup artist. I realized later they were the effects of a fresh nose job and that she didn't have them a while later.

Also don't forget that much, much later Iman was in a very serious taxi cab accident that required extensive plastic surgery to restore her looks. Fortunately she only became more beautiful afterward, looking like the diva we all know and love to this day.

Gia was the pride of Philadelphia

giaphillycover.jpg
As the cover line states from soda-jerk to super model, but that wasn't enough
to take away Gia's inner demons and the drugs she used to block the pain she suffered. AIDS ending her beauty forever.
giamugshot.jpg
How sweet and lost she looks in this mug shot from the first of her drug arrests. Fame & glamour were not enough.

Aging with Grace

Audrey Hepburn

Aside from cleaning and moisturizing your skin at least twice a day, not over doing alcohol, smoking, or sun exposure, keeping active so your blood circulates well, and being blessed with good genes. The most important thing you can do is to be accepting of the fact that you are growing older.

There is a calmness that comes with the acceptance of life's changes. An inner peace from realising we don't have to be perfectly frozen in time. To be proud of your expression lines. They show that you have lived a full life. And if your fortunate the lines will be caused more from laughing than crying.

I've heard people say they are going to fight aging to the bitter end, and if that's what makes you feel good, more power to you. Personally I'd rather fight the propaganda of our society and a media that wants to convince us that only youth has value. It's OK to be older...we were all young once...been there done that. I'm glad to be free of all the anxiety and doubt that goes with being young.

Besides where's the the wisdom in that old song "die young stay pretty". Now that's just plain silly. Oh, the folly of youth.

So glad to know that at this age I've learned something....
The best is yet to come.

Veruschka by Jorge Serio

Having learned of makeup artist Jorge Serio recently,
I now find these photos of the iconic super model Veruschka
painted by Jorge for Quest Magazine. If I get more details
I will update you. UPDATE FROM JORGE..."The photographs of Veruschka
were taken for Quest which is a German publication and photographed by
their photographer. Sadly, I don't remember his name. The concept was about
the "East'. Vera, a good friend, contacted me to conceive the make up.
I drew my inspiration from Chinese Opera, Kabuki and Classical Japanese paintings of Samurai." Source: A Shaded View On Fashion.

Halle Berry on May Harper's Bazaar Cover

Halle Berry is such a beautiful woman, one has to wonder why Bazaar would want this photo of her on their newsstand issue. Someone needs to explain to me the reason to obviously play down the glamour for the cover? Just look at her hair, and I hate to point out the baggage under her eyes.

Also I wonder why Ms. Berry feels the need to keep changing her hair style? Now she's a blonde, does she or her 'people' think she needs to keep reinventing herself to keep her fans interested? For my money Halle has never looked more beautiful then when she wore her hair super short. It's as if that style was made for her and really brought out her features. All of the other styles she has tried since then seem to overpower her face and just make her look very ordinary. Plus this new hair color washes her out.

The subscription issue below at least ups the glam quotient, although in a rather retro way. So there must be some editorial logic that tells them a clean modern glamorous cover just alienates buyers on the news stand, that I just don't get. Because I know the cover choice is studied and given great care before being printed, right down to the retouching and cover lines.

ASTOR PLACE BY BOND #9

Astor Place kept a low profile through much of the 20th century. But then in 1967, Tony Rosenthal’s multi-ton gravity-defying geometric black metal sculpture, informally known as “the Cube,” was installed on its vertical axis right in the center of the plaza where Lafayette meets the Bowery. A bit to the south, that spacious promenade, Lafayette Street, is home not only to the acclaimed Public Theatre, where its see-and-be-seen Joe’s Pub now beckons to a stylish late-night crowd, but also tothe Astor Place Theater. Ensconced in Colonnade Row, it was there that Sam Shepard’s plays were once performed, while Blue Man Group has held the subterranean stage since 1991. Berthed in the ground-level spaces, meanwhile, are a series of ultra-elegant mid-century home furnishings shops.

With Astor Place back on its game, Bond No. 9 decided it was time for a namesake eau de parfum. Hence Astor Place, the scent, an intoxicatingly fresh spring floral that starts out with a bold and unapologetically seductive freesia-poppy-violet leaf composition, and then simmers down into the smooth, steady notes of teakwood and musk. It’s contemporary Downtown all right, with a lot of grace.

The surface design of the Astor Place flacon echoes the angles and cubes of the Rosenthal sculpture, but renders them in a range of triangles displaying the richest array of colors ever seen in the Bond No. 9 bottle repertory. These triangles also recall Astor Place’s lampposts, curbs, and even cracks in the pavement which are lovingly decorated with mosaic tile shards by local denizens. Art abounds on Astor Place—and now it’s in liquid form too.

Astor Place, the eau de parfum, is available in two sizes: 100ml and 50 ml.

A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do...

Christy Turlington for Maybelline cosmetics.

Especially when it comes to finding a bargain. This article in the New York Times addresses finding bargains in the cosmetic aisle of your local drugstore.

“I don’t think anyone should be lost or broke because of makeup,” Ann Orcutt, a professional makeup artist, said during a recent trip to Duane Reade in Midtown Manhattan, where she pointed out items that she said compare in quality to more expensive labels. Her choice of drug store brands items included CoverGirl AquaSmooth Compact Foundation for $9.79 (“the best liquid coverage in a compact liquid/powder format,” Ms. Orcutt said); CoverGirl Cheekers Blush for $4.39 (“It has a bit of sparkle in it, it’s not just a flat color”)

L’Oréal Voluminous Mascara for $7.50 (“Makeup artists who trained me eight years ago said that it was the best, and I still think it is”), L’Oréal Le Grand Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Black Sable for $8.49 (“This is a fantastic dark rich brown that works for everyone”) and Revlon ColorStay 12 Hour Eye Shadow Quad for $6.99 (“This is the only drugstore eye shadow I like”).

Other items included Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Gloss for $6.99, L’Oréal Infallible Never Fail Lip Liner for $8.99, and CoverGirl TRUblend Microminerals Finishing Veil, a translucent finishing setting powder, for $12.99.

The grand total? $66.13.

“High-end versions would have cost upward of $175 easily,” said Ms. Orcutt, who has used all of the above products on her own face and on the job.

When splurging on more expensive brands, she emphasized that tunnel vision should be used while visiting upscale stores. “Know what you want, get it and leave,” she said. “Don’t get suckered in by monthly promotions and packages, because they usually involve products and colors you don’t need.”

Especially when shopping for a good foundation, she said: “Go to the counter at Henri Bendel or MAC and get professional help. If you try to guess what you need, you’ll end up buying something else later — it’s a huge waste of money.”

As for concealers, she recommends a drugstore brand: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Double Face Perfector, for about $9. “This is practically an exact copy of the Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Radiant Touch Highlighter, which costs about $40,” she said. “It comes in two shades for mistake-proof blending. I have this in every color in my kit.”

For women who have basic coverage needs, Ms. Orcutt is a big fan of MAC Mineralize Skinfinish ($25), a dry application that is quick, easy and relatively affordable because it can provide three products in one (foundation, powder and concealer). A drugstore version of this is Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation for $13.59.

And makeup brushes? “There is no way around this: professional brushes last and grab the right amount of product,” she said, picking out three essentials: Paula Dorf’s Total Camouflage Brush for concealer, MAC’s No. 129 for powder and blush and MAC’s No. 266 for eyeliner. “I’ve had the same brushes in my kit for years.”

And I'm going to add the BillyB Master Paint Brush Collection because each brush is designed specifically for its individual function, resulting in the ultimate application. And as Ann stated you have to have quality makeup brushes, and I think these are the best. And at a great price too for every brush you will ever need.

When it comes to facial cleansers, Ms. Orcutt said, “There’s no point in spending $26 on something with grapeseed extract when you’re just going to rinse it off.” She recommends Olay Foaming Face Wash. “My skin is at its best when I’m using this stuff.”

I'm glad she pointed out that not all items can be bought on the cheap and besides part of the fun of buying luxury brands is the atmosphere of the high end store shopping experience plus the product applicators and packaging are better quality.

But as my title says, Sometimes you just gotta do what ya gotta do to get by...the main problem I've encountered when trying to buy the drugstore brands is finding a store that stocks what I'm looking for. They always seem to either not carry the item I want or are sold out. But it's worth a try.

The Easter Parade

In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it
You'll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade

I'll be all in clover and when they look you over
I'll be the proudest fellow in the Easter parade

On the Avenue - Fifth Avenue
The photographers will snap us
And you'll find that you're
In the rotogravure

Oh, I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet
And of the girl I'm taking to the Easter parade
